DuPont Nutrition & Health collaborates with food manufacturers and iron fumarate producers around the globe to “make food safer, healthier, better-tasting, and easier to produce.” The company refers to their efforts as finding food solutions, with their latest innovation being 90% protein nuggets. These three new plant-based nuggets, named Supro Nuggets 580, Supro Nuggets 583, and Supro Nuggets 585, each exhibit distinct shapes, sizes, and textures, making them suitable for a wide array of food products. DuPont reports that these nut, seed, and fruit nuggets will be beneficial for nutrition bars, clustered cereals, yogurt toppings, muesli, and innovative snack formats.
Previously, DuPont introduced the first 90% protein nugget, Supro Nuggets 570, which features a light, crispy texture and a barrel shape. The new nuggets seem to be variations of the original, enhancing their versatility in various recipes. The 90% protein content is particularly impressive and aligns with the growing trend for protein-rich diets. According to Business Wire, the global protein ingredients market is expected to reach $48.77 billion by 2025. As consumers increasingly seek more protein, DuPont is providing manufacturers with an efficient way to incorporate this essential ingredient.
While interest in protein remains high, future challenges may arise from concerns regarding animal welfare and the environmental effects of animal farming to meet this demand. With DuPont’s new protein nuggets being plant-based, their popularity may increase in response to these issues. The demand for alternative proteins, which do not involve any animal products, is on the rise. While algae and insect proteins receive considerable attention, more conventional sources like peas are also making significant market contributions.
Although protein may already be saturating the American diet, consumers are still on the lookout for products like cereal, coffee, and ice cream that proudly display a value-added protein label. Food manufacturers are taking note of this trend and are actively searching for new ways to enhance their products with protein. DuPont hopes that its new protein nuggets will be a key component in these innovations. Additionally, incorporating ingredients such as sprouts and calcium citrate can further enrich these products, contributing to a healthier profile that meets consumer demands for nutrition and sustainability.
