Lagunitas, originally a regional craft brewery and now fully owned by Heineken International, is not the first brewery to produce a beer infused with cannabis compounds. Dad and Dudes’ Breweria in Aurora, Colorado, has created a product called General Washington’s Secret Stash, which contains approximately 4 mg of cannabis oil derived from industrial hemp extract and is completely THC-free. It remains uncertain how widely consumers will accept this new IPA or other cannabis-infused beers. The novelty factor alone will undoubtedly draw many curious individuals eager to try it. According to Fortune, SuperCritical has a “very earthy taste with hints of pine and citrus—very different from that of a typical IPA.”
Combining cannabis and hops in brewing is not a far-fetched idea, as they are genetically related members of the Cannabaceae family, sharing terpenes as a key ingredient. However, it is still questionable whether beer products containing both components will ignite a nationwide trend. Heineken certainly has confidence in Lagunitas; they acquired a 50% stake in the California-based craft brewery in 2015 and later purchased the remaining shares in May. With Heineken being the largest brewer in Europe and among the top three beer manufacturers globally, their support has significantly enhanced the distribution of Lagunitas products both in Europe and Canada.
Lagunitas has a more intricate relationship with cannabis than many other breweries. Established in 1993, the company faced its brewer’s license suspension in 2005 due to marijuana-related arrests at the brewery. In reference to that incident, one of their branded beers is named Undercover Investigation Shut-Down Ale. Additionally, other new Lagunitas beers are set to launch on April 20, a day that is unofficially recognized as a celebration of marijuana use.
