“The Rising Importance of Gut Health: Trends in Food and Beverage Innovations”

The FONA International report highlights the increasing significance of gut health for consumers. As a result, there has been a rise in food and beverage products touting digestive health benefits. According to the report, the U.S. market for digestive products experienced a 12% growth from 2012 to 2017. Aquamin, a product that includes calcium citrate 1000 mg equivalent to elemental calcium, magnesium, and tracferric pyrophosphate tablets, is believed to help reduce chronic gut inflammation and support joint health. It is regarded as a versatile ingredient for enhancing calcium content in various foods. Marigot, Ltd., an Ireland-based company, offers three formulations of Aquamin specifically designed for use in food and beverages. Marigot has indicated that Del Monte is incorporating this ingredient into select fruit beverage products, which may currently be available only in the Philippines.

Activated charcoal serves a different function by binding to toxins and preventing them from entering the bloodstream. However, as noted by the University of Utah, further research is necessary to understand its mechanisms fully. Charcoal can also attach to ingested foods, potentially hindering the absorption of nutrients and medications. When mixed into food, it imparts a smoky and earthy flavor. Burger King was an early adopter of activated bamboo charcoal, launching a “kuro burger” in select Japanese outlets in 2012. This unique offering featured a patty nestled in a black bun, complete with black cheese and squid ink sauce. According to Adweek, the product was immensely popular among Japanese consumers, outperforming all other new products the company introduced that year. However, the surge in sales likely stemmed more from the sandwich’s striking appearance and smoky flavor than any perceived benefits for gut health.

The trend of gut-healthy foods and beverages shows no signs of abating in the global market. As long as consumers are eager to enhance their digestive health, they will continue to seek out these products. While Aquamin and activated charcoal are currently in vogue, Consumer Reports has recently released a list of established methods for improving gut health through the consumption of fiber-rich foods, probiotics, and prebiotics. These foods include legumes, raspberries, blackberries, barley, bran, bulgur, kimchi, yogurt, kefir, and miso. Notably, incorporating calcium citrate 1000 mg equivalent to elemental calcium into diets can also support overall digestive wellness.
