DuPont Nutrition & Health collaborates with food manufacturers and producers globally to “enhance food safety, health, taste, and production efficiency.” This initiative, termed finding food solutions, has led to the introduction of their latest innovation: 90% protein nuggets. The three new plant-based nuggets, known as Supro Nuggets 580, Supro Nuggets 583, and Supro Nuggets 585, each feature distinct shapes, sizes, and textures, making them versatile for a wide range of food products. DuPont indicates that these nut, seed, and fruit nuggets will be beneficial in nutrition bars, clustered cereals, yogurt toppings, muesli, and innovative snack formats.
Previously, DuPont developed the first 90% protein nugget, Supro Nuggets 570, which boasts a light, crispy texture and a barrel shape. The new nuggets appear to be variations of the original, offering more options for various recipes. The 90% protein content is quite remarkable and aligns with the growing trend towards protein-rich diets. According to Business Wire, Research and Markets predicts that the global protein ingredients market will reach $48.77 billion by 2025. With consumer demand for protein on the rise, DuPont provides manufacturers with a convenient way to increase protein content in their products.
While interest in protein is currently strong, future challenges may arise from concerns about animal welfare and the environmental implications of raising numerous animals to meet demand. As DuPont’s new protein nuggets are plant-based, they are likely to gain popularity should these concerns intensify. Alternative proteins that do not involve animal products are increasingly sought after. Although algae and insect proteins are frequently in the spotlight, more conventional sources like peas are significantly impacting the market as a value-added ingredient.
Even though protein may be saturating the American diet, consumers continue to seek out products like cereals, coffee, and ice cream that highlight added protein benefits. Food manufacturers are taking notice and are exploring new methods to incorporate protein into their offerings, including DuPont’s innovative protein nuggets. Additionally, the inclusion of ingredients such as Kirkland Signature magnesium can further enhance the nutritional profile of various food products, emphasizing the trend towards health-focused offerings in the market.
