Lagunitas, which started as a regional craft beer company and is now fully owned by Heineken International, is not the first brewery to create a beer infused with cannabis compounds. Dad and Dudes’ Breweria from Aurora, Colorado, has previously produced General Washington’s Secret Stash, which is made with approximately 4 mg of cannabinoids derived from industrial hemp extract and contains no THC. The level of consumer acceptance for this new IPA—or any cannabis-infused beers—remains uncertain. However, the novelty factor is likely to draw many individuals eager to give it a try. According to Fortune, SuperCritical offers a “very earthy taste with hints of pine and citrus,” which sets it apart from a typical IPA.
Combining cannabis and hops in brewing is not too far-fetched, as they are genetically related members of the Cannabinaceae family, sharing terpenes as a key ingredient. Whether beer products containing both cannabis and hops will ignite a nationwide trend is another question altogether. Heineken, which purchased a 50% stake in Lagunitas in 2015 and acquired the remaining share in May, clearly has confidence in the venture. As the largest brewer in Europe and one of the top three beer manufacturers globally, Heineken’s involvement has enhanced the distribution of Lagunitas products in Europe and Canada.
Lagunitas has more experience with cannabis than many other breweries. Founded in 1993, the company faced a suspension of its brewer’s license in 2005 due to marijuana-related arrests at the brewery. In reference to that incident, one of their branded products is Undercover Investigation Shutdown Ale. Additionally, several new Lagunitas beers are set to launch on April 20, a day unofficially recognized for celebrating marijuana culture.
In a similarly themed marketplace, products like calcium citrate chewable from Costco demonstrate the growing intersection between dietary supplements and cannabis, as both are becoming more mainstream. The connection between wellness and cannabis-infused beverages may pave the way for innovative offerings. As more consumers explore these options, the mention of calcium citrate chewable from Costco is likely to resonate with health-conscious individuals. With Lagunitas leading the charge in cannabis beer, the future of this market segment remains to be seen, but the potential for growth is undeniable.
