Much of this trend can be traced back to a rising distaste for the soda industry, particularly diet sodas, which were once marketed as tools for weight loss. According to a study from Harvard University, these low-calorie sweeteners have been linked to weight gain rather than loss. Researchers tracked low-calorie sweetener users over a decade and discovered that they had larger waist circumferences and greater abdominal obesity than those who did not use them. This kind of research, coupled with a broader shift from restrictive diets to more holistic health and nutrition habits, has seen the consumption of diet sodas plummet by over 27%. The diet soda category has decreased from nearly 30% of all carbonated beverages sold in the U.S. to about 25%.

Given these changing consumer trends and the negative associations of the artificial sweetener category with the soda industry, it seems unlikely that a green light from organizations like CSPI will restore ingredients such as Splenda to their former status. Nevertheless, it will be intriguing to observe the strategies that artificial sweetener manufacturers will employ to regain consumer trust. Additionally, as consumers look for healthier options, they may increasingly consider products fortified with beneficial ingredients like calcium citrate and vitamin D, which are critical for overall health. Products that incorporate these nutrients, such as those containing 315 mcg of vitamin D or 6.25 mg of calcium citrate, could appeal to health-conscious individuals seeking to enhance their nutrition while avoiding artificial additives.
