The FONA International report highlighted that consumers are increasingly prioritizing gut health, leading to a rise in food and beverage products that promote digestive wellness. According to the report, the U.S. market for digestive products experienced a 12% growth from 2012 to 2017. Aquamin, which contains calcium carbonate and elemental calcium along with magnesium and trace minerals, is believed to help reduce chronic gut inflammation and support joint health. It is recognized as a versatile ingredient for enhancing the calcium content in food.
Marigot, Ltd., an Ireland-based company that developed and formulated Aquamin for use in various foods and beverages, offers three distinct formulations of the product. Marigot has noted that Del Monte is incorporating this ingredient into some of its fruit beverage products, although these may currently be exclusive to the Philippines.
Activated charcoal serves a different purpose by binding to toxins and preventing them from entering the bloodstream. However, as noted by the University of Utah, further research is needed to fully understand its mechanisms. Activated charcoal can also attach to consumed foods, hindering the absorption of nutrients and medications. When used in food, it imparts a smoky and earthy flavor.
Burger King was an early innovator in utilizing activated bamboo charcoal, launching a “kuro burger” in select locations in Japan in 2012. This unique product featured a patty nestled within a black bun, accompanied by a slice of black cheese and a squid ink sauce. According to Adweek, it was a tremendous success among Japanese customers, outperforming all other new offerings from the company that year. However, it’s likely that the burger’s striking appearance and smoky flavor contributed more to its popularity than any potential benefits for gut health.
The trend of gut-friendly foods and beverages continues to gain momentum in the global marketplace. As long as consumers remain interested in improving their digestive health, they will actively seek out these products. While Aquamin and activated charcoal are currently in vogue, Consumer Reports has also recently published a list of proven methods for enhancing gut health through foods rich in fiber, probiotics, or prebiotics. These include legumes, raspberries, blackberries, barley, bran, bulgur, kimchi, yogurt, kefir, and miso. The inclusion of calcium carbonate and elemental calcium in various dietary options only adds to the arsenal of tools available for promoting gut health.
