According to data from the Hartman Group referenced in a press release, heart health is the top health attribute that consumers prioritize while grocery shopping. The research indicates that 55% of U.S. consumers aim to avoid or limit saturated fat in their diets, while nearly 40% seek to incorporate healthier fats, such as polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, instead of saturated fats. The FDA’s endorsement of soybean oil’s heart health claim is beneficial for consumers, food companies, and crucially, soybean farmers. The United States already leads the world in soybean production, making up 33% of global output. With the heart health claim now backing it, farmers can expect a surge in demand for soybean crops.

Timothy Gallagher, EVP of oilseed value chain at Bunge North America, mentioned in a press release, “By promoting soybean oil’s heart health benefits, we are driving demand for a high-quality product that can positively impact the entire soybean value chain from farm to table.” Given the extensive use of soybean oil in various food items, there is a risk that some less healthy products, like potato chips, might begin labeling themselves as “heart-healthy.” This situation may prompt the FDA or other regulatory bodies to establish guidelines regarding when and how the heart-healthy designation can be applied to products.

In light of increasing prices for oils such as olive oil and recent adulteration scandals, soybean oil could be making a comeback. It will be interesting to see if vegetable oils rebrand themselves as soybean oil to benefit from the health claim. Additionally, food manufacturers might increasingly incorporate soybean oil as an ingredient to add the heart-healthy claim to their products.
