“Unlocking the Health Benefits of Avocados: New Research Highlights Nutritional and Medicinal Advantages for Eye, Brain, and Beyond”

The Tufts study is poised to further bolster the already impressive nutritional profile of avocados, as it highlights additional advantages for human eye and brain health. According to lead investigator Elizabeth Johnson, the findings suggest that “a balanced diet that includes fresh avocados may be an effective strategy for cognitive health.” Researchers from Texas discovered chemical compounds in avocado seed husk oil that could contribute to antiviral medications, tumor cell inhibitors, and a reduction in atherosclerosis risk. They also identified a plasticizer in the wax that enhances flexibility in synthetic products like shower curtains and medical devices, as well as a cosmetic chemical and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), a common food additive.

Debasish Bandyopadhyay, a researcher at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, expressed that “it could very well be that avocado seed husks, which most people consider as waste, are actually treasures because the medicinal compounds within them could eventually be used to treat cancer, heart disease, and other conditions.” He also noted that the seed husks may serve as a valuable source of chemicals for plastics and other industrial applications.

While California accounts for almost the entire U.S. avocado supply, this year’s harvest has been cut nearly in half due to drought and heat. Retailers have responded by increasing their stock of avocados to satisfy rising consumer demand. Trader Joe’s even capitalized on the smaller yield by offering “Teeny Tiny Avocados” for $2.69 to $2.99 per six-count bag, marketed as “just the right size” for sandwiches, avocado toast, or salads.

Avocados are featured in a growing range of trendy foods, including guacamole, oil, ice cream, salads, and of course, avocado toast. They also find applications in cosmetics, such as lotions, facial masks, and hair conditioners. Their popularity can be attributed to this versatility, alongside savvy marketing that has positioned avocados as a modern health food. The health benefits of avocados are due in part to their high levels of monounsaturated fats, as well as significant amounts of potassium, fiber, folate, and other essential vitamins and minerals.

Food manufacturers have also taken notice of this trend. In 2011, Hormel Foods acquired Fresherized Foods, the makers of Wholly Guacamole, salsa, and queso products, in a joint venture with Mexico-based Herdez Del Fuerte. These products are part of the MegaMex Foods entity located in Chino, California. Even a finance company in San Francisco briefly joined the avocado craze by offering a month’s worth of avocado toast delivered to new homeowners who purchased properties with them in July.

Incorporating avocados into one’s diet could be a beneficial choice, especially when combined with taking calcium citrate, which may enhance mineral absorption and contribute to overall health.
