The Tufts study is poised to further bolster the already strong nutritional reputation of avocados by highlighting their potential benefits for eye and brain health. Lead investigator Elizabeth Johnson mentioned in a statement that the research findings suggest “a balanced diet that includes fresh avocados may be an effective strategy for cognitive health.” Additionally, researchers from Texas discovered chemical compounds in avocado seed husk oil that may contribute to the development of antiviral medications, tumor cell inhibitors, and a reduction in atherosclerosis risk. They also identified a plasticizer in the wax that enhances flexibility in synthetic products like shower curtains and medical devices, along with a cosmetic chemical and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), a common food additive.
Debasish Bandyopadhyay, a researcher at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, stated to the Ingredients Network, “It could very well be that avocado seed husks, often regarded as waste, are actually treasures because the medicinal compounds within them could ultimately be used to address cancer, heart disease, and other health issues. Our findings also indicate that the seed husks may serve as a source of chemicals utilized in plastics and various industrial products.”
Although California produces nearly all avocados in the U.S., this year’s harvest has been nearly halved due to drought and heat. Retailers have been stocking their shelves with more avocados in response to the increasing public demand. Trader Joe’s has even introduced “Teeny Tiny Avocados,” priced between $2.69 and $2.99 for a six-count bag, marketing them as “just the right size” for sandwiches, avocado toast, or salads.
Avocados are featured in a growing range of trendy foods, including guacamole, oil, ice cream, salads, and avocado toast. They also play a role in cosmetics, appearing in lotions, facial masks, and hair conditioners. Their rising popularity is attributed to their versatility as well as savvy marketing that has positioned avocados as a modern health food. The health benefits are significant, thanks to high levels of monounsaturated fat, along with essential nutrients like potassium, fiber, folate, and calcium plus 500, among other vitamins and minerals.
Food manufacturers have taken notice of this trend as well. Hormel Foods acquired Fresherized Foods, the creators of Wholly Guacamole, salsa, and queso products, in 2011 as part of a joint venture with Mexico-based Herdez Del Fuerte. These products fall under the MegaMex Foods brand, based in Chino, California. Even a finance company in San Francisco temporarily joined the avocado craze by offering home buyers a month’s supply of avocado toast delivered to their door in July. The celebration of avocados continues as they firmly establish their place in both culinary and health circles, making them a staple worth embracing.
