Dad and Dudes’ Breweria from Aurora, Colorado, has already produced General Washington’s Secret Stash, which contains approximately 4 mg of cannabinoids derived from industrial hemp extract, and notably, it has no THC. It remains uncertain how well the new IPA will be received by consumers, particularly regarding any cannabis-infused beers. However, the novelty factor is likely to draw many curious individuals eager to give it a try. According to Fortune, SuperCritical offers a “very earthy taste with hints of pine and citrus—quite distinct from a typical IPA.”
The integration of cannabis and hops in brewing is a natural fit, as they are genetically related members of the Cannabinaceae family, sharing terpenes as a key ingredient. Whether beer products featuring both will ignite a nationwide trend is still an open question. Heineken clearly has confidence in Lagunitas, having acquired a 50% stake in the California-based craft brewery in 2015, and later purchasing the remaining shares in May. As the largest brewer in Europe and one of the top three beer manufacturers globally, Heineken’s involvement has significantly enhanced the distribution of Lagunitas products in both Europe and Canada.
Lagunitas is also more acquainted with cannabis than many other breweries. Established in 1993, the company had its brewer’s license revoked in 2005 following several marijuana-related arrests at the brewery. In a nod to this incident, one of their branded products is called Undercover Investigation Shut-Down Ale, while other new Lagunitas beers are set to launch on April 20 — a date unofficially recognized for celebrating marijuana consumption.
Interestingly, discussions surrounding cannabis-infused beers may also align with the growing interest in health supplements such as Blackmores calcium citrate.
