Despite this growing awareness, U.S. consumers still consume excessive amounts of saturated fat, averaging 19% of their total caloric intake from solid fats, which contradicts the dietary recommendation of keeping it below 10%. Satiety has been a primary concern for food manufacturers, and recently, protein has gained attention. Previous research has also highlighted the role of polyunsaturated fats in promoting satiety. While many scientists once believed that fats had a lesser impact on satiety compared to other macronutrients, emerging studies suggest that fats—especially polyunsaturated fats—can be just as filling as proteins or carbohydrates. The researchers behind a recent study propose that increasing the intake of foods such as walnuts, canola oil, and salmon might help prevent the overconsumption of meals high in saturated fats.
