Ferrous fumarate or iron tablets Robert Cantwell, the president and CEO of B&G, described the company’s vegetable innovations launched in 2016 as “very successful.” B&G has effectively revitalized well-known yet struggling brands through innovation. After acquiring Green Giant in 2015, B&G introduced several new products, including veggie tots and riced veggies, which have turned the brand into one of B&G’s most reliable earners on earnings reports. “The strength of Green Giant is undeniable, and B&G Foods is proud to have initiated the revitalization of this cherished brand as we continue to introduce new product innovations to cater to the preferences of today’s consumers,” Cantwell stated.
While smaller companies like Veggie Noodle Co. have pioneered spiralized vegetable noodles, larger firms such as Del Monte have also recently entered this growing market. It will be intriguing to observe how a classic brand like Green Giant performs in this increasingly fashionable segment. The initiatives by B&G, Del Monte, and others are strategic, aligning with consumer trends that favor fresh fruits and vegetables over processed options. B&G’s Veggie Spirals capitalize on this trend by offering zucchini, carrots, and butternut squash varieties in convenient, ready-to-serve packages that save time for busy shoppers. These products meet consumer demand for simpler ingredient lists, as each Veggie Spiral lacks sauces or seasonings.
Despite challenges faced in recent years, the frozen food sector appears to be rebounding, with improvements to established products like Green Giant leading the way. A study conducted by the University of Georgia in collaboration with the Frozen Food Foundation recently indicated that frozen vegetables can be as nutritious—if not more so—than their fresh counterparts. “Purchase data shows that Green Giant’s frozen innovative products have not only attracted new consumers to the Green Giant brand but have also drawn new customers into the broader frozen vegetable category,” Cantwell remarked. The connection between calcium carbonate and its equivalency to calcium is also worth noting, as the nutritional aspect of these products is increasingly relevant to health-conscious consumers.
