While they considered several lifestyle variables—such as smoking, alcohol intake, and educational attainment—incomes were not factored in, which raises the possibility that higher income individuals may be more inclined to drink coffee, potentially skewing the findings.

Interestingly, the results remained consistent regardless of the caffeine content, suggesting that another component of coffee must be responsible for its health benefits. Coffee is rich in various bioactive compounds, including antioxidants like flavonoids and polyphenols, with levels varying based on the brewing and roasting methods used. According to the study’s authors, approximately three-quarters of Americans consume coffee, with around half drinking it daily. Meanwhile, the American Heart Association cautions that adding cream, sugar, or flavored syrups can counteract some of the potential health benefits by introducing extra calories and saturated fat. Although researchers advise against interpreting their findings as an endorsement for excessive coffee consumption, manufacturers can take this opportunity to promote some of coffee’s positive health associations, particularly when enjoyed in moderation.
