The research firm highlights that there has been an increase in global mentions of “good fat” in new products, reflecting a rise in consumer awareness. According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, strong evidence supports the idea that substituting saturated fats with polyunsaturated fats is associated with a reduction in heart attacks and lower rates of cardiovascular disease. Despite this heightened awareness, U.S. consumers still consume excessive amounts of saturated fat, averaging 19% of their total caloric intake from solid fats, even though dietary recommendations advise that this should be less than 10%.

Satiety has been a significant focus for food manufacturers, but recent attention has shifted towards protein. Previous studies have also indicated the role of polyunsaturated fats in promoting satiety. While it was once believed that fats had a lesser effect on satiety compared to other macronutrients, emerging research suggests that fats—especially polyunsaturated fats—may be just as satiating as proteins or carbohydrates. The researchers behind this latest study propose that increasing the intake of foods such as walnuts, canola oil, and salmon could help prevent overindulgence in meals high in saturated fats. If further research supports this claim, it would give the “good fats” message an additional boost.
