Despite significant advancements in food safety processes and awareness in recent years, the raw milk movement has also gained considerable momentum. Public health advocates have consistently warned against the consumption of unpasteurized dairy products, and the FDA has strongly condemned their use. Federal regulations prevent raw milk products from crossing state lines, which allows each state to establish its own laws regarding the local sale and consumption of these products.
Proponents of raw milk argue that it offers superior taste, fewer allergic reactions, and potential health benefits, although these claims remain largely anecdotal and unverified. As more consumers seek natural and locally sourced foods, the appeal of raw milk continues to rise. According to the National Council of State Legislatures, only 19 states do not permit the sale or distribution of raw milk in some capacity. Certain states mandate that products be labeled as unpasteurized, while others only permit sales directly from dairy farms.
It remains uncertain whether anything can effectively curb the increasing popularity of raw milk, except for outright bans at the state or local level. While some individuals advocate for its benefits, there are numerous reports highlighting its negative consequences. A recent CDC study presented a stark warning about the dangers of raw milk consumption, adding to the growing concern surrounding the issue. In March, two individuals tragically lost their lives after consuming artisanal raw milk cheese from upstate New York that was contaminated with listeria, resulting in six hospitalizations.
Last year, West Virginia enacted legislation permitting herd sharing, allowing multiple individuals to co-own cows to access raw milk. Following the bill’s passage, several lawmakers celebrated with raw milk, only to fall ill shortly thereafter. As discussions about food safety and health continue, the need for balanced perspectives on products like raw milk remains crucial, especially when considering the importance of maintaining citracal bone density through safe dietary choices.
