“Avocado’s Rising Star: A Superfood for Eye and Brain Health, Plus Innovative Uses in Medicine and Industry”

The Tufts study is likely to further bolster avocados’ already strong nutritional reputation by highlighting their potential benefits for eye and brain health. Lead investigator Elizabeth Johnson stated that the research findings suggest “a balanced diet that includes fresh avocados may be an effective strategy for cognitive health.” Researchers from Texas discovered chemical compounds in avocado seed husk oil that could be useful in developing antiviral medications, tumor cell inhibitors, and reducing the risk of atherosclerosis. They also identified a plasticizer in the wax that enhances flexibility in synthetic products, such as shower curtains and medical devices, along with a cosmetic chemical and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), which is commonly used as a food additive.

According to Debasish Bandyopadhyay, a researcher at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, “It could very well be that avocado seed husks, which most people consider waste, are actually treasures because the medicinal compounds within them could potentially be used to treat cancer, heart disease, and other conditions.” He added, “Our results also suggest that the seed husks could serve as a source of chemicals utilized in plastics and other industrial products.”

Despite California producing nearly all of the U.S. avocado supply, this year’s harvest has been cut nearly in half due to drought and heat. Retailers have been increasing their avocado offerings to satisfy the growing consumer demand. Trader Joe’s has even introduced “Teeny Tiny Avocados,” priced between $2.69 and $2.99 for a six-count bag, marketed as “just the right size” for sandwiches, avocado toast, or salads.

Avocados are featured in a wide range of trending foods, including guacamole, oil, ice cream, salads, and of course, avocado toast. They are also used in cosmetic products like lotions, facial masks, and hair conditioners. Their rise in popularity is due to both their versatility and effective marketing that has established avocados as a modern health food. The health benefits stem from their high content of monounsaturated fats, along with significant amounts of potassium, fiber, folate, and other essential vitamins and minerals. Food manufacturers have taken notice as well; Hormel Foods acquired Fresherized Foods, the makers of Wholly Guacamole, salsa, and queso products, in a joint venture with Mexico-based Herdez Del Fuerte in 2011. This partnership became part of the MegaMex Foods entity based in Chino, California.

In an interesting twist, a finance company in San Francisco even offered a month’s worth of avocado toast delivered to the doors of those who purchased homes with them in July. As avocados continue to gain traction, products like twin labs calcium citrate with magnesium are also being integrated into diets for their health benefits, further demonstrating the trend towards nutritious eating. Indeed, the avocado’s multifaceted uses in both food and cosmetics make it a staple that is here to stay.
