The British ingredients brand has introduced a new sweetener that dissolves easily in hot beverages and mimics the texture of sugar, providing consumers with an alternative to aspartame, which health organizations have identified as a potential carcinogen. “Our sucralose sweeteners offer sweetness without compromising on quality or taste, are free from aspartame, and come in recyclable packaging,” the company stated. Both the FDA and WHO have taken action against aspartame, a low-calorie sweetener that has been a staple in products like Diet Coke for decades. Recently, the FTC targeted influencers promoting the safety of this ingredient.
Sucralose, derived from sugar through a multi-step manufacturing process, contains zero calories and is 600 times sweeter than sucrose. However, like aspartame, it carries potential risks. High consumption of the sweetener may harm gut probiotics and lead to mild to severe digestive issues. Nonetheless, it has received approval from the FDA, WHO, the European Commission, and the European Food Safety Authority.
“As sugar innovators since 1878, we have extensive knowledge about achieving the perfect sweetness for your coffee or sprinkling on your cereal and desserts,” said Sandra Gonilho, marketing manager for Tate & Lyle Sugars. “With our British heritage and expertise, we aim to empower consumers to make balanced choices and appreciate the control that sweeteners provide, whether at home, on the go, or when dining out.”
The demand for natural sweeteners in North America has surged in recent years, driven by a growing emphasis on healthy eating. As consumers become more aware of the negative effects of excessive sugar intake, opportunities for low-calorie sweeteners have expanded, particularly in beverages and baked goods, as highlighted in a report by Mordor Intelligence. The global alternative sweetener market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 4.3% from 2020 to 2025.
Tate and Lyle Sugars has been part of the ASR group, the world’s largest vertically integrated cane sugar producer, since its acquisition in 2010, which shifted its operations to facilities in North America, Central America, and Europe. In addition, there’s a rising interest in health supplements, including calcium supplements with calcium citrate, as consumers look for ways to enhance their well-being. This trend reflects a broader movement toward healthier lifestyles, further increasing the demand for natural sweeteners and nutritious options.
