Wild Planet is launching a new line of seafood products that the company asserts have a lower environmental impact compared to traditional options. This sustainably sourced collection features two types of fillets: Wild Smoked Pink Salmon in Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Wild Smoked Mackerel Fillets in Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Additionally, it includes two canned items, Skipjack Solid White Light Tuna and a three-pack of Wild Pink Salmon, along with a convenient ready-to-eat meal, Wild Tuna Quinoa Salad. The fish is responsibly harvested from the North Pacific Ocean.
Founded in 2005, the California-based company claims to be the first large-scale brand focusing on sustainably sourced seafood. Wild Planet collaborates with small-scale fishermen who employ methods such as 100% pole and line fishing, as well as selective harvesting, as stated in a press release. The company emphasizes that fishermen target one species at a time to minimize the unintentional catch of other species.
“Since our establishment, we have aimed to raise awareness about the significance of knowing the origin of your seafood and the nutritional benefits that canned seafood can offer, all while making it more accessible to consumers,” said Bill Carvalho, the founder of Wild Planet. A seasoned professional in the seafood industry, Carvalho shared with Forbes in 2021 that he started the company after observing unsustainable practices in commercial fishing for many years. In 2021, Wild Planet was acquired by the Milan-based sustainable foods conglomerate, Bolton Group, which pledged to boost the seafood brand’s growth.
Wild Planet asserts that its products, from canned tuna to ready-to-eat tuna pasta salad meals, are sustainably sourced. With this recent launch, the company aims to broaden its retail presence and provide consumers with easier access to sustainable options while educating them about the origins of the fish. The new products are now available at Whole Foods, joining other Wild Planet offerings already sold at the retailer. The company chose to partner with Whole Foods due to its commitment to sustainability. However, Wild Planet has not announced whether the products will be available in other stores.
This launch comes at a time when there is increasing focus on the environmental impact of the seafood industry, particularly amidst declining fish populations and global climate change. A recent Morning Consult poll of over 2,100 consumers found that four out of five respondents believe that the health of the ocean and its capacity to provide sustainable seafood is important to them. When asked about their seafood purchasing habits, 68% of those surveyed stated they would only commit to buying sustainably sourced fish products. While this figure represents a majority, it was still less significant to consumers than price and the desire for products raised without chemical fertilizers. Nevertheless, Morning Consult noted that 82% of respondents believe it is humanity’s responsibility to ensure sustainable seafood for future generations.
